San Francisco’s Monophonics have a smoking cover of “Bang Bang ” on their newest record, preceded by a tune simply called “Sure is Funky.” That oughta tell you all you need to know about this steadily ascending collective, which does it the way James Brown did it: heavy, funky, sweaty and with nothing left behind.
